Unlike larger firms where projects pass through multiple layers of management, our streamlined process allows us to move quickly, respond proactively, and avoid unnecessary delays. Our team remains closely involved throughout construction and is often available beyond standard hours to provide timely solutions that keep contractors moving and projects on schedule.
We are also highly sensitive to budget considerations. By focusing on smart planning, attention to detail, and practical design solutions, we help clients achieve cost-effective results without compromising design integrity or functionality, saving both time and money along the way.
Our Story
M.E. Designs was founded by Mike Shick with a clear vision: to create an engineering design firm that delivers exceptional technical expertise without sacrificing personal attention.
Based in Paso Robles, in the heart of San Luis Obispo County’s Central Coast, M.E. Designs specializes in custom residential and light commercial projects. From the beginning, Mike believed that great engineering comes from being deeply involved in every phase of a project, not handing work off through layers of management.
That philosophy continues to guide the firm today.
Our Team
M.E. Designs is a small, experienced team of one to three engineers and design professionals at any given time.
This intentionally lean structure allows our clients to benefit from a wide range of experience and creative problem-solving while maintaining the personal touch that comes from working directly with the professionals responsible for your project. Our team is hands-on, highly responsive, and invested in seeing each project through from start to finish.
MEET THE TEAM
Mike Shick, P.E. & Owner
Michael Shick, PE, is the Founder and CEO of M.E. Designs. He specializes in custom residential and light commercial projects, structural inspections, and tenant improvements. With a background in surveying, general civil engineering, and structural engineering, Michael brings a comprehensive and practical perspective to every project. He holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in six states.
Michael believes that when a project requires engineering, clients should receive extraordinary value in return—particularly through thoughtful design that translates into real cost savings. His approach is rooted in customer care, with a strong focus on protecting clients’ financial investments and delivering complete, highly readable plans. Over the years, M.E. Designs has earned the trust of hundreds of appreciative clients, with a large portion of work coming from repeat customers.
Based in Paso Robles, Michael is also a team member of the San Luis Obispo County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), reflecting his commitment to community preparedness and service. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, the outdoors, fitness and health, gardening, camping, raising golden retrievers, cooking and smoking food, and brewing his well-known kombucha.
John P. Maggi, Civil Engineer
John P. Maggi is a Civil Engineer at M.E. Designs, specializing in residential design. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly and is a licensed Civil Engineer in California.
John is committed to strong customer service and believes clear communication is essential to successful project outcomes. Known for his availability and responsiveness, he makes a point to be accessible for client questions throughout the design process, helping ensure clarity, confidence, and smooth execution.
Randy Sherman, Architect
Randy Sherman, Architect, brings decades of architectural experience to M.E. Designs, with expertise spanning residential, commercial, industrial, medical, faith-based, retail, adult daycare, and master planning projects. He has held leadership roles throughout his career, including Architectural Design Lead, Architectural Group Leader, and President of a 400-person design-build corporation.
Randy holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Lawrence Technological Institute and is a licensed architect with National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) certification. His professional philosophy centers on sustainable, environmentally respectful design and contextual architecture that prioritizes client needs over personal design preferences. By listening first, respecting established budgets, and focusing on the end user’s experience, Randy delivers thoughtful, creative solutions tailored to each project.
Lisah Shick, Administrative Assistant
Lisah Shick is an Administrative Assistant at M.E. Designs, where she supports the day-to-day operations of the office. She assists with accounting tasks such as balancing accounts, organizing financial records, managing paperwork, and keeping office processes running smoothly.
Lisah is known for her dependable, organized approach and her willingness to help wherever support is needed. Whether handling financial records, organizing files, or managing behind-the-scenes tasks, she plays an important role in helping the team operate efficiently. Based in Paso Robles, Lisah enjoys learning new skills, staying organized, and helping others.
